Project details

In Benin, in West Africa, everything that happens takes place under the protection of Elegguà, an Orisha divinity, guardian of all things. Elegguà is always present, whenever and wherever, in every sphere of life. The divinity watches over the village and protects it from evil forces, which means anything that threatens the fertility of the earth or the well-being of the people. These people are specialists in “sciabica” fishing which involves a kind of long, ancient net that the fishermen drag along the seabed manually. Most of the fish they catch is sold in the Cotonou markets. Elegguà watches over the market, in the same way as it watches over the traders and their customers, making sure that both sides get a fair deal. The women play a fundamental role both in the family and the tribal clan; she is the absolute guardian of the customs, traditions and religious ceremonies in Benin.
