Ventotene and Santo Stefano

Project details

Ventotene and Santo Stefano are two small islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea that have a lot to say about the history of the Mediterranean, and about Italy too. From the Roman ships to the relics of World War II – from the villa of the Emperor Augustus to the old Bourbonic prison – the natural environment has absorbed and enveloped all the changes that have taken place on these sea-surrounded lands. The stories of those who have lived, and continue to live their lives on the islands gives a special insight into the link between the past and the present with an eye to the future. Since the creation of the Protected Marine Area in 1998, there has been a lot of research into the various migratory bird species that come to the island and its sea beds which, now the poaching has been stopped, are filling up again with underwater life. Today the islands offer a wonderful natural environment, where ancient traditions are still treasured and the memory of European Federalism is kept alive. In fact, it was on the small island of Ventotene during the Fascist period that the first idea of a free and united Europe came into being. A journey through time to observe the changes above and below the water of Ventotene and Santo Stefano: two tiny islands, but of great importance to Mediterranean culture.
