Marettimo

Project details

Marettimo, one of the Aegadian islands, is an enchanting haven. As seductive as it is hostile, it is almost impossible to live on. And yet, man managed to settle here thanks to nature’s gift of the sea. For many years now, fishing has been the mainstay for the families living on the island. But life on Marettimo has never been easy. Many inhabitants were forced to leave their harsh, but much loved island for Alaska where they made their fortunes from salmon fishing. Today the creation of a Marine Reserve represents the future of the island; by protecting nature an eco-friendly development is ensured. A glimpse at the history of the island and its landscape – from its underwater wonders to its high mountains, known as the Sicilian Dolomites, in the hope that Marettimo will manage to offer its young people a better future.
