Project details
The people of the Tuamotu Islands, in the Archipelago of French Polynesia, have always lived on the islands’ natural resources. One of the most profitable businesses on the island of Fakarava is pearl farming. This documentary follows the fascinating process of a pearl’s development inside an oyster: an authentic oyster farm in which each oyster wraps layer after layer of its pearly substance around a foreign body, whether it’s a spherical shell or a piece of cloth, manually introduced by man. The sea-beds of the Southern seas are home to some unbelievably beautiful species; life-forms of the most varied and colourful kind live in the Polynesian depths. Not only the sea, but the land leaves nothing to be desired either: among the fruit that this lush land offers its inhabitants is the vanilla pod, which has undergone intensive cultivation over the last few years and is exported to markets all over the world.
