The Chapada Diamantina National Park

Project details

The heart of the state of Bahia, in the North East of Brazil, is home to the “Chapada Diamantina”, a vast natural area that was proclaimed a National Park in 1980. It was once the land of diamond diggers called “garimperos”, who spent centuries sifting the river in search of those precious stones. The exploitation of diamonds is now forbidden and the new generations, although still proud of their past, have learned to transform the work of their fathers and have come up with new activities. These new generations are all very respectful of their natural heritage. Eric comes from a family of “garimperos” and now works as a guide in the Natural Reserve – he knows every corner of this park like the back of his hand. He is going to be our guide through the waters of the reserve, exploring its waterfalls, caverns and canyons, which probably constitute the real wealth of this land.
