Sumba

Project details

Legend and myth envelop the wild natural environment of the Archipelago of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia. According to indigenous belief, a long blue stairway stretched all the way up from Sumba, one of the most remote islands of the Archipelago, to Heaven. In this way the ancestors could come down to the island to protect the living. In Sumba the ancestral spirits are part of every-day memory, kept alive not only in the form of sculpted stones (the Maràpu), but in the trees, rivers and on the mountains. This is a journey to discover a sacred culture, the mainstay on which an almost forgotten small community basis its survival.
