Lazio, the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean

PandatariafilmLazio, the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean

Project details

Roma was founded and developed in virtue of its privileged position on the banks of the Tiber. It is thanks to the river, and to the fact that it flows into the sea of Lazio, that the city expanded to become the capital of an empire encompassing the whole of the Mediterranean. The Super intendancy of the Cultural Heritage of Lazio is responsible for the work being carried out in the Testaccio area of the city to uncover the remains of the vast portal settlement that linked Rome to the ancient port of Ostia. Professor Claudio Mocheggiani Carpano, the director of the Expedition, told us that Roman cargo ships arrived here from the East and the West laden with merchandise. “This was then loaded onto small boats and taken upriver to Rome”, he said. On a journey from the Tiber down to the sea and on to the Pontino archipelago, our documentary wants to confirm the importance of Rome as capital of the Sea and underline, not only the natural beauty of its surroundings, but above all the important archeological remains that testify to Lazio having been “The Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.
