The White Gold of the Sea

PandatariafilmThe White Gold of the Sea

Project details

Sea water produces more than 30% of the world’s salt supply and it is certainly the best. Many ancient civilizations realized immediately the importance of this white gold of the sea and organized themselves accordingly to exploit it.
Along the Trapanese coast a few salt mines still exist and continue to provide an existence for the more tenacious salt miners. They are usually a family business and the symbol of a lifetime’s work, and are still managed today, as they were in the past, without disturbing the natural equilibrium of the sea. Giovanni and Alberto, two salt miners, share the magic of the past with us as they work in the traditional Sicilian mines. Having resisted the pressure of modern technological and its facilitations, these mines still preserve all their original beauty. Giovanni and Alberto’s memories take us back into the past and the lively songs of the salt miners can almost be heard as they come echoing back through time.
