The Big Lagoon

Project details

Life in the many fishing communities surrounding the Ciènega Grande Lagoon of Santa Marta is about to be seriously disrupted. It is almost as if the inhabitants are waiting for the slow and inevitable end. The lagoon is drying up and the increase in the saline content of its water is provoking a worrying scarcity of fish. Another threat is the wilting of the century-old mangrove trees essential to the lake’s well-being. Nature is once again called upon to make way for greed; men never fail to show that they are their own worst enemy. The Big Lagoon, once one of the most flourishing lagoons in the world, is today fighting not only for its own survival, but for those of its inhabitants too. The construction of roads that prevent the sea water from flowing into the lagoon basin, and the diversion of the rivers by the breeders of livestock in need of fresh water, are considered by the fishermen as being a real curse on their lives. It would be enough for them to live on the hope of a future for their villages, but the only thing left to them is their faith. All aspects of life on the Big Lagoon are threatened and this ancient village and its inhabitants, who animate and love it, risk being suffocated.
